brooklyn, coney island, highline and 4th of july fireworks.

Wednesday 4th July 2018
Today was going to be a massive day involving a huge amount of walking.  Started off by walking from our hotel to the Brooklyn Bridge, over the bridge in to Dumbo and a bit of a walk around Brooklyn.  We actually made our way towards the transport museum but it was shut due to 4th July.   We then caught a subway all the way to Coney Island where I think half of the population of NY had gone for the day.  It was packed in the amusements and on the boardwalk and beach.  After looking around for a while we got an ice cream before getting back on the subway.  We caught the subway F line to 14th Street and walked from there to Carrie Bradshaw's  house from Sex  and the City.  Got some photos on the front steps.   From there we walked to the start of the highline at Gansevoort St and walked the full length of it.  The highline is really nice and the flowers and trees are beautiful.
Got some 5 Guys Burgers for dinner and then walked past the Flatiron building to the end of E 23rd at FDR Drive to see the fireworks.  Unfortunately the police had closed off the entry apparently due to there being too many people already on the elevated roadway.  So there we stood with thousands of people looking at the elevated road which blocked half the fireworks. At least we were there and got to see most of the show.
After the 25 minute display we then walked back to the subway and caught it back to the hotel.  The Empire State Building was lit up all red white and blue and looked really nice.   It was now 11pm and we had been gone 12 hours and walked over 37000 steps.  Our poor feet were so sore.  Tomorrow we won't walk so far as I don't think we'll be able.

central park and times square

Tuesday 3rd July 2018
First full day in NY and we wanted to just have a bit of a walk around.  We walked up to ground zero and through the memorial and around the twin reflecting pools just for a look.  The trees had grown so much since I was last there.   From there we walked through Oculus (Westfield) to the subway station.  We caught the subway up to Time Square and had a walk around and through it.  As we made our way further North we stopped at a shopping Centre and had some sushi for lunch.  This was right on the edge of Central Park and that lead us to walk through the park.  We spent a few hours in there waking around the park and it was quite nice.  It was hot and sweaty but in the shade it was nice.  After coming back out of the park we made our way to the Rockefeller Plaza and had a walk around there.  By this time it was getting late and close to dinner time.  We thought we would catch the subway back to the hotel and find something to eat close to there.  Once we got back, there was a pub right next door but it was a little on the expensive side.  Right above the pub was a Chinese restaurant and we decided to go there. The food was good,  I had sesame chicken and Bronte had twice cooked pork stir fry. After that we got some drinks and went back to our room.  Tomorrow we are going to do the Brooklyn Bridge and lots of walking.

new york new york

Monday 2nd July 2018
Early rise today as we were getting picked up at 8am to get to the airport nice and early for our flight and so Debby could drive the 6 hour trip back to Houston and get home at a decent hour.  Our flight was delayed half an hour but we got to JFK about 3.30pm. By the time we got our luggage, walked to the train and took the 1 hour train ride we arrived at the motel at around 6pm. The motel is one street back from ground zero and we have a view of the Statue of Liberty from our bed through the window.  Really beautiful view.  Once settled we went to TGI Friday's for dinner. After that we did a walk to the river near the Staten Island  ferry and then around Battery Park back up to One World Trade centre.  It is so hot and humid in NY and they are experiencing almost a week of high temps. Looks like it will be a hot 4th of July.
