mexico gringos!!

Sunday 2nd August 2015
Today we wanted to travel to Mexico and spend the day there.  It was only about 10 miles from our motel to the border.  You can catch a train to the border crossing and then walk across the border.  It was a bit freaky as you literally walk across the border past police with machine guns and enter the country without being stopped by anyone.  No passport check, security check or anything.  Once over the border it was like stepping into Bali.  It is amazing how the USA can be so western and civilised and how opposite Tijuana is.  That said it was far from bad.  There was a street party and fair on for the weekend and it was very festive.  Food stalls everywhere and lots and lots of people.  Found a place for lunch and had a nachos and a beef soup type dish.  The food was pretty yummy actually and we enjoyed it.  From there we caught a taxi to the beach which is right at the bull ring.  Again being the weekend and quite warm there were loads of people everywhere.  Had a nice walk along the beach to the USA border which kind of felt like the Berlin wall!!  Luck would have it that there was a car show on at the bull ring (no bull fights today) and there were hundreds of young Mexican fellows with their prides and joys on display.  They had some cars that were 'jumping' literally into the air.  I'll try and upload a video of that if I can work out how.  After a few hours there we caught the bus back to 'Centro.'  The bus was no less than probably 30 years old and was a bit of fun.  It only cost 10 pesos for each of us to travel.  Once back to the border though, there was a huge line up to get back to the USA.  2 hours in line and then told we were in the wrong line.  A nice lady let us into the line in front of her so we didn't have to go back to the end.  Thank god.  20 minutes on the train and we were back to the motel and ready to get dinner.  The experience was good and we thoroughly enjoyed the time there.  Just the wait at the border coming back sucked a little.  Monday we shall explore downtown San Diego.
